The Power of a Shower: How to Use Water as an Energetic Reset
I have two favorite places in my apartment: my bed and my shower.
We'll save the talk about my bed for another day.
The love for my shower started several years ago when a mentor of mine suggested I use the time not only for physical cleansing purposes but as an energetic cleanse too.
This was one of the most simple and powerful pieces of advice I've ever been given.
Here's why...
The Science: Why Showers Feel So Healing
Our skin is the body’s largest organ and it's constantly in conversation with your environment—absorbing, sensing, and releasing. When we shower, we're not just rinsing off dirt and sweat from the day, but also giving our nervous system a chance to re-regulate.
Warm water helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the “rest and digest” mode that lowers cortisol (the stress hormone) and slows your heart rate.
The steady rhythm and sound of running water also promotes the release of dopamine and serotonin, the “feel good” neurotransmitters that help quiet mental noise and creates a gentle, meditative state. This is why we often get our best ideas in the shower.
The Energy-Clearing Benefits of Showering
The top of your head—where key energy centers are located—is deeply connected to cleansing and renewal. As water cascades down, it moves through our energy field (or aura), helping to release what we've unconsciously absorbed from others.
You might notice you feel “off” after spending time around someone who’s anxious, after a stressful meeting, or when you’ve been overthinking for hours. Using your shower as a ritual to wash off "energetic residue" can help you feel lighter, clearer, and more centered.
Showering with Intention
Water holds memory. Instead of letting your mind wander and going on autopilot as you move through your routine, spend a moment to set a clear intention as you step into the shower or as the water runs over you.
Here's an example of one I use: “I release what isn't mine and allow myself to feel calm and peaceful".
It might feel silly at first, but you'd be surprised how much this quick practice can amplify the purifying effects.
4 Best Times to Use a Shower as an Energetic Reset
As a transition after work: Shift from productivity to presence and release the stress of the day.
After being around anxious or heavy energy: Release what you may have picked up from others.
When you’re overwhelmed or stuck in analysis paralysis: Let the water ground you and clear mental fog.
Before bed: Soothe your nervous system and prepare your body for deep rest.
Treat your next shower as more than a routine. Let it be a ritual of release and renewal—a way to transition and a way to come back to yourself.
To prioritizing your energetic hygiene AS MUCH as your physical hygiene.
